Cebuano teen’s film
grand winner in Korean fest
From Europe to America and now back to Asia, Derick Cabrido’s “Children’s Show” has been receiving accolades left and right in international film festivals.
The film’s winning streak began immediately after it premiered at Cinemalaya’s New Breed section last year where it won Best Supporting Actor for Miggs Cuaderno, Best Editing, Best Cinematography and Best Sound. More local recognitions followed when it won Best Story at the Gawad Tanglaw 2015, and Outstanding Achievement in the Development Communication Category at the 9th Hildegarde Awards.
The international acclaim started pouring in last March at the 35th Oporto International Film Festival or Fantasporto in Portugal where the film won the Special Jury Prize in the Orient Express section. After that, the film was selected as the lone Philippine entry at the 2015 Fribourg International Film Festival in Switzerland.
It then scooped up the Special Jury Prize, Grand Jury Award for Best Screenplay and Fantastic Cinema Emerging Filmmaker Award for Cabrido at the Fantastic Cinema Festival of the Film Society of Little Rock in Arkansas the following month.
Just this month, “Children’s Show” won the grand prize in the AsiaPacific Young Filmmakers Awards of the Gwangju International Film Festival that took place in South Korea from May 14-18.
Posting a photo of the film’s trophy, director Cabrido congratulated the whole team behind the gritty drama that was based on the real life story of children being used by a syndicate for an underground mixed martial arts tournament.–
