Yaw-Yan summer clinic culminates with a bang
The culminating rites of this year's YawYan ArDigma Martial Arts Federation, Inc. Summer Clinic went on smoothly and successfully the other night at the Yaw-Yan Headquarters situated at the fourth floor of Coast Pacific Downtown Center just across the University of Cebu-Main Campus along Sanciangko Street, this city.
Close to 50 kids and teenage practitioners show off their skills in arnis, Aryan style/sipang pamalo, bo-staff, tonfa/baton, yawara stick, Yaw-Yan combat (self-defense), Yaw-Yan ArDigma System, Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) and ‘Bigayan’ or give and take by multiple opponents.
The highlight of the ceremony was the full contact sparring between two young amateur MMA and kickboxing fighters in Josh ‘Buffalo’Ybanez and two-time national gold medalist Ken ‘Shaolin’ Caniga.
Yaw-Yan ArDigma CEO and President Master Benigno ‘Ekin’ Caniga Jr. said the summer clinic ended, but this will not be the last time for the students to hone their skills as they will also be joining in the combat grassroots program of the Cebu City Sports Commission.
“Many showed potential and they will continue to train and sharpen their skills in our grassroots development program. Some will be joining in the 'Bakbakan sa Sugbo' fight card at the end of the month,” said Master Ekin.
Meanwhile, lawyer Rajiv Enad,Yaw-Yan senior member and municipal councilor of Minglanilla who was the event's guest of honor, urged students to continue to train in martial arts that will surely develop their self confidence and discipline.
Yaw-Yan is a unique Filipino martial arts derived from the two syllables of “Sayaw ng Kamatayan” or ‘Dance of Death.’ It was introduced to the public for the first time by its originator GM Napoleon “Nap” Fernandez in a simple ceremony in Manila in 1972.
