The challenge of a Values Education teacher
Education is a noble profession and being a teacher is equally a dignified and challenging task that calls for one's dedication and passion to be effective in imparting not just the theories in every lesson taught but also a true learning experience for every students.
For me, teaching is not just a career that requires the application of your knowledge and skills. More importantly, teaching is providing avenues and creating opportunities for students to learn the deeper meaning of life and for building a character resilient enough to handle every situation. Hence, the school is one significant institution that builds, shapes and strengthens the character of every person who comes in contact with it. Teachers are in the best position to influence the kind of experience that students get from the school.
This was my vision when I accepted a teaching position at the Philippine School in Doha, State of Qatar. I took the challenge to do not only what I can but to do the best I can in fulfilling my obligations as a teacher not only confining myself to the assigned tasks but going an extra mile to make my students learn more and gain worthwhile experiences in class. It was but a great challenge on my part to keep abreast with the standards of the school, given all the requirements that we need to meet. Teaching Values Education is tough. It is not just about teaching a formula to solve a problem or to get things done, but it is about building the character of a person, which I believe, is a great challenge. It's a challenge that I'm continually facing because I believe I can't be more effective, if I myself have not internalized the values that I'm teaching. I try to live them as much as I can and I hope I will be able to leave an impact in the lives of my students. I will be happy enough that a student or two will be able to remember me for the good values I had taught them.
