OFW center in Taiwan in ruins after typhoon

-

The San Pedro Calungsod Migrants Mission Station in Taiwan is in ruins after super typhoon Soudelor hit the country on August 7.

In its Facebook post, the Central Taiwan Migrants Concerns said that as of August 9, the mission station still has no power and water, with intermittent Internet.

“A simple place of pilgrimage... a home for the distressed migrant workers... a house of prayer now is in ruins!” it said.

According to the Central Taiwan Migrants Concerns, the chapel is around 50 years old and has been abandoned many times until it was named the migrants mission station after the first Filipino saint on October 21, 2012 during his canonization.

The station was meant to “accompany the migrants in their journey of faith and life. The place was chosen because it reflects his life in the Visayan province where he hails from. It is away from the noise of the city, surrounded by rice paddies, walking distance from the factories nearby where the migrant workers work.”

“Kuya Pedro and the migrant workers gather together every weekends to celebrate the Eucharist, sharing food and drinks, sharing laughters and pains, singing songs to appease the loneliness of their hearts in the place far away from home. A place where seafarers and fishers gather to unload their fears while travelling in the vast ocean.”
