Church exec: Keep partisan activities away from church

While saying that he appreciated Bando Osmeña starting its political activity last Monday with a mass, Auxiliary Bishop Dennis Villarojo of Archdiocese of Cebu yesterday requested that all politicians keep partisan activities outside any church and away from the altar.

He called on all political aspirants to preserve the non-partisan nature and stand of the Ramon Catholic Church by not holding any political activities inside and it is better they will not make any partisan moves inside any of its churches.

“In principle dili unta maayo nga dunay partisan activity sa altar sa simbahan. Pero maka-excuse ang Bando Osmena Pundok Kausawagan sa ilang gihimo nga proclamation sa San Pedro Calungsod Chapel sa may South Road Properties niadtong nilabay nga lunes kay basin og wala kini maklaro ngadto sa maong grupo nga dili kini pwede,” Villarojo said.

Archbishop Emeritus Ricardo Cardinal likewise said that the church should not be used as a venue in declaring candidates for elections as it is a holy place.

“Sayod usab ako nga matured na ang mga Sugbuanon nga mopili sa ilang mga kandidato sa umaabot nga eleksyon,” he said in explaining that the Cebuanos knows whom to vote for no matter where their candidacy got announced from.

“Mas maayo nga dili kamo mohimo ug mga dayag kaayo nga partisan nga gimbuhaton sulod sa simbahan. Pero modawat gihapon ang simbahan ug mga political party nga motambong sa usa ka santos nga misa tungod kay usa man usab kini ka maayong pagag-ingnan nga buksan nila sa usa ka santos nga misa ang ilang mga kalihukan sa umaabot nga election,” Villarojo said.

He, however, requested that no one should make a big fuss about what happened last Monday as it could no longer be undone.

“Dili nalang diskotihon ang maong aktibidades tungod kay nahitabo na man. Panghinaut nalang nga mapanaminan kini sa ubang mga aspirant candidates nga dili na mopahigayon og mga kalihokan sulod sa simbahan gawas sa misa,” he said.

Villarojo said the Archdiocese of Cebu is currently making a set of guidelines to be used in the church, especially this coming elections, particularly on disallowing the presence of campaign materials inside the church and of candidates delivering a speech to the congregation.

“Ni-appreciate ta sa gibuhat sa mga Aspirant Candidates nga buksan ang ilang kalihokan sa santos nga misa, pero mas maayong misa lang ilang buhaton sulod sa simbahan,” he said.

“Ilahi lang nila og lugar ang purely partisan activity sa ilang partido sa gawas sa simbahan aron magpabilin ang pagkabalaan ug pagkasagrado sa simbahan nga maoy misahanan,” he added.

He said that once approved and signed by Archbishop Jose Palma, the guidelines will be distributed to the different parishes under the Archdiocese of Cebu.
