Canoy promises support for FOI Bill
With the local campaign period starting, political jingles have also started to reverberate on the roads while candidates making the usual promises during assemblies and rallies.
One of whom is San Fernando Mayor Antonio "Abe" Canoy, who is seeking a congressional seat in the first district of Cebu.
Canoy of Nationalist People's Coalition vows to combat graft and corruption and push for efficient mass transport system such as light railway transit from Carcar City in southern Cebu to Danao City in the north.
He said he would lobby for the passage of the Freedom of Information bill which had been pending in Congress. He believes that the bill would be a significant tool against graft and corruption.
He added that he would also push for the creation of more job opportunities, provide skills trainings, food security and people empowerment, and craft measures to upgrade the Internet connection in the country.
He could not also help but to criticize his opponent, first district representative Gerald Anthony "Samsam" Gullas, for leaving no legacy during the latter's stint.
He also mentioned the graft charges involving Samsam's grandfather, former representative Eduardo Gullas, such as the P36 million computerization and P25 million Tuba-tuba plantation projects.
First district covers the cities of Talisay, Naga, and Carcar and the towns of Minglanilla, San Fernando, and Sibonga.
Samsam debunked Canoy's claim. He said pouring more funds in education and school building expansions has been the Gullases' legacy. He also cried foul over Canoy's move in using the graft cases against his grandfather for the mayor's political advancement.
The cases had been elevated to the Supreme Court and are now under review.
