BC Runners to hold free clinic

The BC Runners of Baybay City in Leyte will be holding a free running clinic this weekend as part of their extensive preparations for their first ever full marathon race set for December 11.

Also known as the Baybay City Runners, they're a growing running community in the west coast of Leyte. They started as Team Insanity from the famous High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) workout by Shaun T.

The club was formed when Doreen Ruzi Dañas, Noriebelle Bacusmo, Merry Joy Genaccarro, Nelichor Bardon, Dalisay Roca, Floresol Israel decided to try running after completing a 60-day insanity program.

Dañas said aside from joining races and actively supporting running especially ultramarathons, the group is now also involved in organizing events. In October last year, they backed up the 100kilometer Leyte Landing ultra race from Palo to Baybay by setting up hydrations stations.

"That's the time when we befriended ultra runners from different places and we came to know one named Ronald Vios from Cebu City, a former Spectrum and Infinitea runner who is now based in Baybay. He helps us from time to time when we train for an ultra race," said Dañas.

"From there, we started running as a team and call ourselves Team Insanity. Until such time while we were training, a lot of friends wanted to join our group. Now, we have over 30 members and growing. We will also launch BC Runners Kids soon," added Dañas.

"As we grow, we change our team's name to Baybay City Runners. We also have members who are athletes and varsities. We are a group of happy runners. We have joined marathons in Bohol and recently 40-plus members including our kids joined the Milo Marathon. Now, we have inspired Baybayanons to run for a healthy lifestyle."

For their two-day clinic, the BC Runners have invited Cebuano long distance running star Noel Tillor as resource speaker.

A five-time ultra marathon champion and sixtime marathon winner including four in the prestigious Cebu Marathon, the 31-year-old Tillor also makes grade in international events, topping the 2016 Borneo International Marathon and placing seventh during the 2013 Standard Chartered Marathon Singapore where he became the first Asian finisher in the elite category.

"I am looking forward with much excitement to share my know-how about the art of running to both the aspiring and experienced/ competitive runners. As a community coach, that is really my advocacy," said the Bogo City-native Tillor.

After the orientation on opening day, Tillor will take up proper running form. In the second and final day, he will discuss about group run and the application of running techniques.
