Don’t look now, but the Metro Manila Film Festival is not the only one enamored with independent filmmakers these days.
TV5 is bringing indie sensibilities to our living rooms with not just one but two new shows helmed by Brillante Mendoza.
Before 2016 ended, the Happy Network announced a partnership with the internationally acclaimed director. Mendoza, who is coming off a banner year following well-deserved accolades for his police corruption drama “Ma’ Rosa,” will direct “Brillante Mendoza Presents,” a monthly series featuring films made exclusively for TV that will showcase the richness and diversity of Filipino identity and culture.
In a recent press conference, Mendoza further revealed that “the movies will tell unforgettable and intertwining stories shot in different parts of the country. The first film we shot in Binondo. But we will also shoot in Baguio, Davao and even in Tawi-Tawi.”
The series is set to premiere on TV5 this January 21 at 9:30 p.m.
Starting next month, TV5 will also premiere “Amo,” a weekly 13-episode miniseries that will focus on the illegal drug trade. Also helmed by Mendoza, this show will be headlined by TV5's lone remaining franchise actor, Derek Ramsay.
Although Mendoza is known to be supportive of President Rodrigo Duterte’s controversial anti-drug campaign, the filmmaker promised that “Amo” will be Monday, at 8 a.m., with primetime replay at 8 p.m. on Etc. The live telecast can also be watched on TV5, grounded in reality and will be just as riveting as “Ma’ Rosa.”
TV5 president and chief executive officer Vincent “Chot” Reyes calls Mendoza a “content partner.” He said that a big reason for the partnership is that even as the network has developed a strong following among sports fans and news enthusiasts, beefing up its entertainment offerings also provides viewers with more options.
Another reason for the partnership with Mendoza is that Reyes wants to encourage other filmmakers to bring their concepts to TV5.
As he was able to get in touch with Mendoza through the Directors Guild of the Philippines where the latter is a member, Reyes said TV5 also intends to explore creative collaborations with the guild’s members which will soon include TV directors as well.
One such collaboration the network is discussing with the DGPI is “Project Genre” where guild members can submit projects not only to TV5 but also for its digital and cable platforms. – GMA-7, and ABS-CBN.
Don’t miss the Miss Universe swimsuit and long gown competitions on TV5 on January 27 and 29, respectively. A weekend replay of the Miss Universe coronation will also be aired on GMA-7 and ABS-CBN on February 5.
