Mandaue, Toledo decimate foes in Governor's Cup U21 caging
Mandaue City served early notice on its serious title campaign after it pummeled the Consolacion Sarok, 9372, during its first game in North Division 1 of the 1st Cebu Governor’s Cup Under21 Inter-Cities and Municipalities Basketball Tournament at the Tudela Sports Complex in Camotes Island last Friday night.
Consolacion actually got off to a hot start, padding an early 24-16 lead into an 11point advantage, 48-37, at halftime.
But man mountain Jancork Cabahug, Alje Mendez and Froilan Mangubat, all high school stars in the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation, Inc. (CESAFI), masterminded a blistering 26-10 counterattack to give Mandaue a five-point headway, 63-58, going into the last quarter.
Cabahug and Mendez kept their offensive fire burning, conniving for 18 points in the closing minutes of the match to seal Mandaue's 21-point blowout.
Cabahug, an All-Star center for the University of the Visayas Baby Lancers, exploded for 32 points, while Mendez, a mainstay of the Don Bosco Greywolves, and Mangubat of the University of Cebu Junior Webmasters chipped in with 20 and 12 points, respectively, for Mandaue.
Cyril Sabellana paced Consolacion with 22 points followed by Emmanuel Villamor and Marco Panta with 23 points combined in a losing cause.
As of this writing, Mandaue was gunning for its second win against Tudela, which suffered a 59-74 loss to Liloan as its turf.
In South Division 3, Toledo City banked on a devastating 25-5 bomb in the third period to decimate Alcantara by 32 points, 90-58, at the Alegria municipal gym.
Tommy Bubuli charted a tournament-high 38 points for Toledo, which also drew 16 points from Clark Bubuli and 11 from Ezra Nortiza.
Jayvie Emmanuel Lumapay, Klent Bani and Cyrel Campaner led Alcantara with 36 points in between them.
In the other results, Jade Cañete fired 28 points and Emerson Salarde had 15 as Dumanjug kickstarted its bid with an 81-70 win over Badian, while Crispin Villacencio churned out 25 points and Joseph Jake Fernandez added 15 as Barili dominated Alegria, 94-69. —
