He matched his own record in just five years.

Vincent Edouard Anthony Gullas, 27, placed first in the September 2017 Physician Licensure Examinations, an achievement he earned for the first time five years ago when he topped the licensure examination for medical technologists.

“Medicine is draining and tiring. You miss out on everything because you have to study. The fight is probably in the drive to keep going,” he told The FREEMAN when asked about the challenges he faced while preparing for the exam.

"The review period can be exhausting. Plus in the boards, you'll never know what might come out, and never 100 percent sure of your answers. You just need to study hard, do your best, and leave it all to God," he added.

While he comes from the prominent Gullas family in Cebu, Vincent said there was no pressure from his family for him to excel.

“My parents didn't put so much pressure on me. They just told me to do my best and pray,” he said.

Vincent is the grandson of Talisay Mayor Eduardo Gullas and the brother of Cebu First District Rep. Gerald Anthony Gullas.

In the September exam, Vincent registered a rating of 90.5 percent, securing the top spot all to himself.

He earned his medical degree from the University of Santo Tomas (UST) in Manila, summa cum laude, and his undergraduate degree in medical technology from Velez College in Cebu City, magna cum laude.

Velez, incidentally, produced the seventh placer in the same exam, Mark Andrian Yano, from its medical school, the Cebu Institute of Medicine (CIM).

Like Vincent, Mark also placed a high premium on his faith while preparing for the board.

“Whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it for the glory of God. 1 Cor. 10:13. This bible verse kept me going during the intense 2 months review period,” he said.

The September 2017 exam was taken by 4,064 examinees with 3,340 passers, according to the Professional Regulation Commission (PRC).
