Slaughter thankful for award, but wants PBA title the most
Greg Slaughter is grateful. The Best Player of the Conference – for the seasonending PBA Governors’ Cup – is nice. But for him, it’s a championship he wants.
“It’s a nice prize to have after working hard since I got my injury,” said the center for Barangay Ginebra. “But obviously, the real reward is winning a championship and hopefully, we can get that done.”
The seven-foot center has won with the University of the Visayas Green Lancers and with the Ateneo Blue Eagles. He also has a PBAtitle with Barangay Ginebra also from last year’s seasonending conference. Slaughter played Game One then was sidelined the rest of the way with a knee injury.
Slaughter also dispelled thoughts that despite what seems to be a leaner frame, he is lighter on his feet.
“I actually weigh more than before,” explained Greg. “When I entered rehab, I had to start from scratch and I got to learn a lot of things with the help of my coaches. I learned how to strengthen my body and build more on that during our off time.”
“The toughest adjustment coming back for me is surviving the conference grind,” added Slaughter. “It’s much different from rehab when you’re on your own and out of the spotlight and just strengthening your body. Back in the conference, you have to win games and always maintain playing shape and pace yourself so you are at your best.”
“And anytime I can play for a championship, I savor the chance.” —
