"In line with the feast of Our Lady of Rule (Nuestra Señora Virgen dela Regla), no classes on November 20-21 in all public elementary and high school in Lapu-Lapu City,” Mayor Paz Radaza said.

The city celebrates the feast day of Our Lady of the Rule every November 21.

Radaza said though the suspension of classes in private schools is left to the discretion of their heads.

Work in government offices, on the other hand, was not suspended, according to the city’s Public Information Office.

The mayor ordered the suspension of classes to give the public time to join the activities and to pay respect to the city’s patron.

The move will also help lessen the traffic congestion and threats to public safety and order, she said.

Make-up classes will be done for schools after the two-day suspension of classes.

As for the security measures for the fiesta celebration, the LapuLapu City Police Office will work with the Philippine Air Force, and City of Lapu-Lapu Allied Force to ensure the peace and order in the city.

In a separate development, the Garbo sa Lapu-Lapu and Civic Military Parade yesterday went smoothly.

Senior Superintendent Elmer Lim, deputy city director for operations, said there were no reports of untoward incidents in all two fiesta-related activities.

"The events were successful and peaceful,” he said.

The traffic situations around the areas of Hoops Dome in Barangay Gunob and of City Public Market in Barangay Poblacion were also smooth-sailing with the help of the personnel from the City Traffic Management System

Civic street dancing, float, higante (giant), and various products from 30 barangays were showcased during yesterday’s events.

Last November 12, the city government held a fluvial procession in honor of the holy image, wherein some 6,000 individuals witnessed the activity.

A mass followed the fluvial procession, which marked the start of the nine-day novena.
