Remollo eyes Dumaguete's hosting of Batang Pinoy again in 2018

- Juancho R. Gallarde

Mayor Felipe Antonio Remollo is confident that Dumaguete City will be able to host again the national Batang Pinoy, possibly in April next year, after the city's successful staging of the sports event last week.

Upon assumption in office, Remollo said his administration will be working very hard for sports, as part of his contribution to the national government's campaign against illegal drugs.

Dumaguete City surprisingly ended at number two in terms of gold medal, among the national delegations to the Batang Pinoy, after Cebu City.

In January next year, Dumaguete will be hosting a unique sports event–on Pinoy games such as takyan, marbles, sack race, luksong tinik, and tubig-tubig, among others– and is expecting at least 3,000 athletes for the children's games 12-and-under in coordination with the Philippine Sports Commission.

In February next year, the Department of Education (DepEd) is also coming up with a big event where at least 5,000 students will converge in Dumaguete to vie in a cultural competition, and mathematics, among others.

Remollo said that, before the year ends, Senator Pia Cayetano will be bringing in women soccer teams for a soccer event in the city.

Meanwhile, the city government is eyeing the construction of dormitories in selected public schools in Dumaguete using the Special Education Fund (SEF) and other sources to prepare for forthcoming sports competitions. —
