DepEd probes alleged maltreatment of pupils

- Odessa O. Leyson

The Department of Education – Cebu City Schools Division will investigate a complaint of a parent that a teacher at the Adlaon Integrated School allegedly maltreated her students, including the complainant’s child.

Adlaon is a mountain barangay in Cebu City.

The mother said the teacher allegedly tied her seven-year-old child and the child’s classmate to their chairs with a yarn because the two kids would not stop talking in class.

DepEd Cebu City Schools Division Supt. Dr. Bianito Dagatan said a committee will look into the complaint.

“I have informed our division committee to visit the school tomorrow (today).

It will serve as validation to that matter and as our basis in submitting report to our regional office. Appropriate action will be based on the report of the committee,” he said.

The FREEMAN is withholding the names of the people involved upon the mother's request.

The mother said it was her friend, a teacher at the school, who informed her about what happened. She confirmed the matter subsequently with her mother-in-law who is looking after her child as she is working in the city proper.

However, her child reportedly refused to talk to her over the phone for fear of being scolded.

“Wala man gud ko nagbase didto kay naa ko nag-work sa city and we are not in good terms sa akong bana. Akong friend ni-chat nako mga alauna sa kaadlawn niingon nga okay raba daw nako nga ako anak gihigot sa maestro sa lingkoranan?” she told The FREEMAN.

“Lugak ra daw pagkahigot pero ang ako, dili maayo nga ingon anaon bisan nagsinipat akong anak, then kibaw ko dili na sipat akong anak. Naningkamot gani ko og trabaho diri para mahatagan og nindot nga kaugmaon akong anak, unya in-anaon lang,” the mother said.

She said the teacher needs to explain what happened and she wants to meet the teacher in person.

“I need an explanation from her pero dili pako kaingon kanus-a ko kaadto kay mananghid pako sa office. Dili baya ta ka basta-basta og lakaw lang,” she said.

Dagatan said it is up to DepEd to carry out sanction if the teacher will be proven guilty of the allegations.
