Ancajas wary of Mexican foe

IBF super flyweight champion Jerwin Ancajas will definitely exercise extra caution when he defends his title against Israel Gonzalez at the Bank of America Center in Corpus Christi, Texas this Saturday (Sunday Manila time).

The 26-year-old Filipino rising star believes the challenger will be quite a puzzle to solve because of his good defense.

“Israel Gonzalez holds his gloves high and is very good defensively,” Ancajas said recently from the United States.

The Cavite City-based boxer is eyeing to pull off a remarkable US debut, his first bout as a Top Rank fighter. He knows that an in impressive win against Mexico’s Gonzalez (21-1, with 8 KOs) will lead to bigger fights in the future.

But Ancajas (28-1, with 19 KOs) believes it won’t be an easy task.

“I will have to figure him (Gonzalez) out in Corpus Christi next Saturday night on ESPN,” he added.

For his part, Top Rank Inc. boss Bob Arum couldn’t wait for his latest acquisition to showcase his wares in a major boxing market like the US.

“Jerwin is an action fighter who has knockout power. I am anxious to see him perform in front of the fans at the American Bank Center in Corpus Christi and those that will be watching on ESPN,” said the veteran promoter.

Ancajas, a protégé of Manny Pacquiao, is coming off an impressive TKO win over Irish Jamie Conlan last November 18 in Belfast, Ireland to defend his title. —
