Firm encourages studes to excel in data science
If you are someone graduating with a degree in mathematics or statistics this year, then you might want to consider a career in data science.
In a recent talk with graduating students from different local colleges and universities, Savvysherpa senior scientist Grant Weller cited the importance of data scientists in different industries.
“Data is only data by itself. It’s only a database, something on a spreadsheet. The value comes when scientists interpret it and turn that information into recommendations and actions,” he said.
Nearly 140 graduating students attended the Savvysherpa-sponsored event at the Waterfront Cebu City Hotel last January 24. These students will soon join the thousands of graduates who will become part of the general workforce this year.
Also at the event were Savvysherpa Chief Executive Officer Ken Ehlert, Chief Administrative Officer Adam West, Data Scientist Michael Lahm, General Manager Zaidevic Zafra, and Dr. Andrew Teasdale, director for training and development.
According to Weller, persons with backgrounds in data science have a lot of opportunities in the fields of technology, advertising, finance, and even healthcare.
Savvysherpa has teams of analysts and researchers in Minnesota, USA and Cebu City who use data to identify, build, test, and refine big ideas for the United States healthcare system to help people live healthier lives.
“We apply scientific methods to business problems. Most people don’t think that way, but we do,” Weller said.
Savvysherpa, which operates at the Cebu IT Park, is currently holding a tour of campuses in the Visayas region to invite students to train and work at the company.
Savvysherpa is part of the UnitedHealth Group, the largest managed healthcare company in the world and is in the top 10 of Fortune 500 companies.
