Torres is May's best in CEPCA monthly
Zilberstein Torres won all but one of his six assignments to claim the May title of the Cebu Executives and Professionals Chess Association (CEPCA) monthly qualifying tournament last Sunday at the Mactan Newtown Beach Resort in Lapu-Lapu City.
Torres, a Bachelor of Science in Information Technology (BSIT) graduate from the Cebu Institute of Technology-University (CIT-U) who presently works as a software engineer for Paranor Cebu, Inc. based in Cebu Business Park, completed the 6-round Swiss system competition with the highest output of 5.5 points.
Torres rammed past John Velarde, Rey Flores, Ramsey Pedroza, Adelyn Bensi, and Peterson Sia before settling for a draw with Vince de la Torre in his final match.
Aside from pocketing P1,500, Torres also joined early qualifiers Eduard dela Torre, Mario Bustillo, Rogelio Enriquez Jr., and Joselito Loques to the grand finals also known as the 'Battle of Champions' this December.
Pedroza, De la Torre and Sia figured in a threeway tie with 4.0 points but Pedroza took the second place honors courtesy of a superior tie-breaker.
De la Torre and Sia finished third and fourth, CEPCA President Engr. Jerry Maratas landed at fifth with 3.5 points, while Jun Kidlat and Rey Flores were at joint sixth and seveth place.
Meanwhile, the Cepcans led by Maratas formally inducted the new members of their club. They are Michael Calimlim, Neal Amores, Ramsey Pedroza, and Joselito Loques.—EBV
