SM malls mark Independence Day

-

Patriotism will be rekindled among today’s families and the youth when all SM Supermalls nationwide unite to celebrate Philippine Independence Day on June 12.

SM malls in Cebu will highlight the celebration with the simultaneous flagraising ceremony at 9 a.m. to be attended by officials from the respective local government units, nongovernment organizations, schools & universities, mall and tenant employees, and agency personnel.

In SM City Cebu, mallers are invited to have their photos taken at the Philippine flag centerpiece called Pilipinas Kong Mahal by ANTHILL Fabric Gallery and a collaboration between artists Cherame F. Lopez and Phillip Anthony Labuga. The sculpture threads 31,500 meters of crochet fibre across 300 vertical hooks painted with exuberant hues of 15 varying colors. Sharing ANTHILL's mission in keeping culture alive and celebrating Filipino pride, the installation weaves an attractive contemporary and multi-dimensional design in the hopes of engaging the younger generation in deepening their love for country. The centerpiece is located at the Northwing Atrium of SM City Cebu.

SM Seaside City Cebu will open the Quilts of Caohagan exhibit featuring the artistry of Caohagan Quilters Community at the Mountain Wing Atrium, 5 p.m.

Caohagan is part of a string of coral reef islands called the Olango Island Group. In 1996 people in Caohagan started making quilt with the guidance of Ms. Junko Sakiyama. Today more than 70 people in the beautiful island earn their living from quilt making.

One should not miss the traditional Filipino house “bahay kubo” display in SM City Consolacion. The house is built with bamboo sticks and a roof of woven nipa leaves that aims to celebrate the Filipino spirit of cooperation and community in the Philippines.

An Independence Day-themed activity for children with cancer under the Kythe Foundation will happen at 4 p.m. at the Cube Wing Atrium in SM Seaside City Cebu on June 10. The 60 cancer-stricken kids will be treated to a day of fun and gettogether, plus a kitemaking workshop by Global Art Cebu.

There will also be a PPop Fest in SM City Consolacion on June 10. See live performances promoting the best of Filipino music and top OPM performers at the Event Centre. And on June 11, be amazed by the Filipiniana-inspired pieces as models from Dark World Modeling Agency take centerstage at the Event Centre.
