A big step towards flexible phones
Samsung announced last week that it has developed an ‘unbreakable’ screen, one which can be used in the making of foldable or bendable devices.
Unlike current display tech standards used in most smartphones and tablets, the screen is not coated with glass, as it is topped by what Samsung calls a “fortified plastic window.” This design component serves as the core of the screen’s flexible properties.
Hojung Kim, general manager of the communication team, Samsung Display Company, notes that the screen’s ‘unbreakable’ characteristics are comparable to the lightweight factor, transmissivity and hardness of glasstopped screens.
It’s also noted that the screen has been verified by Underwriters Laboratories, a testing firm for the Occupational Safety and Health Administration of the U.S. Department of Labor. It has passed a series of durability tests that are based on benchmarks that have been set by the U.S. Department of Defense.
Given its flexible and durable form factors, the screen is forecasted to be used by Samsung in the development of a foldable or bendable smartphone.
Its development also paves new horizons in the overall consumer electronics segment, as it sets new vistas in next generation home appliances, entertainment systems, medical equipment, vehicle consoles and more.
