A bigger, better and more exciting hardcourt showdown among Talisaynons looms on the horizon as the Talisay City Sports Commission (TCSC) Mayor’s Cup 2018 Inter-Barangay Basketball Tournament gets underway this Sunday afternoon at the Talisay City Sports Complex.
Talisay City Mayor Eduardo “Eddiegul” R. Gullas led the formal launching of the annual event at his office yesterday together with councilors Rodi Cabigas, Gail Restauro and Maning Cabriana, Engr. Jeanneth Villagonzalo of the city’s sports commission, and league commissioner Deej Pantinople.
“Kinahananglan ang sports nato labi na sa mga batan-on para they will not go to drugs. Let’s say for example sa basketball, human sa practice, maluya na so they will go home and rest. They will no longer indulge in drugs,” said Gullas. “But the real mission of this tournament really is for our players to be spotted by talent scouts and eventually earn athletic scholarship. We want them to get free education through their athletic gifts.”
Cabigas, who is actively involved in the city’s sports affairs especially in their grassroots development program, aid their annual tilt also serves as their selection process for Talisay’s representatives in the forthcoming Gullas Cup this November as well as in next year’s Governor’s Cup where they are the defending champion.
“We will scout for potentials. Hopefully makakita mi og prospects for Talisay sa umaabot nga Gullas Cup this November and for the next year’s Governor’s Cup,” said Cabigas.
For the Mayor’s Cup, a total of 20 teams representing their respective barangays will see action in the seniors (30-under) and 19 in the juniors (20-under) division.
The contenders are scattered in four brackets that will play in a single round robin format in the classification stage. The top two qualifiers per bracket will proceed to the quarterfinals. The remaining four teams will advance to the semifinals, of which pairing will be determined by drawing of lots. The survivors will then dispute the title in a winner-take-all affair.

The open division will be governed by single round robin format. The top two teams will clash outright for the championship, while Nos. 3 and 4 will battle for third place.
