Magis Ea­gles notch first win

The Sa­cred Heart School-Ate­neo de Cebu (SHS-AdC) Magis Ea­gles turned to a fourthquar­ter of­fen­sive surge to out­last the Cebu In­sti­tute of Tech­nol­o­gyUniver­sity (CIT-) Wild­kit­tens, 71-60, for their first vic­tory in the 18th Cebu Schools Ath­letic Foun­da­tion, Inc. (CESAFI) men's bas­ket­ball tour­na­ment yes­ter­day at the Cebu Coli­seum.

Coin­ci­den­tally, all the top five scor­ers of SHSAte­neo in Koko Tua­dles, Rey Lewis, LA Casinillo, Rafael Tan and Jao Celiri­nos charted 11 points as the Magis Ea­gles snapped out of their two-game slide, their worst start since they started to dom­i­nate the league in 2012 that brought them a to­tal of four straight cham­pi­onships.

The Magis Ea­gles barged into the win col­umn the hard way, with the Wild­kit­tens con­trol­ling the match in all of the three pe­ri­ods.

Show­ing some fight­ing form, how­ever, the Magis Ea­gles slowly chis­eled away a 10-point deficit af­ter the open­ing ses­sion, 12-22, and even seized the up­per hand on sev­eral oc­ca­sions through the Wild­kit­tens man­aged to hang to a 4643 edge head­ing into the fi­nal 10-minute mark of the con­test.

Tua­dles, how­ever, sud­denly caught fire, knock­ing in three 3-point­ers in a 14-5 blast that put the Magis Ea­gles on top for good, 57-51, with only 5:28 left to play.

Celiri­nos later buried an­other trey, Lewis hit a medium-range jumper, and Tua­dles com­pleted a break­away layup as the Magis Ea­gles made it a 23-7 blitz to vir­tu­ally put the win in their pocket with a 66-53 ad­van­tage un­der­neath the last two min­utes of play.

Ear­lier, Jer­ick Jan Ranido dropped 15 of his 24 points in the first half as the Univer­sity of Cebu (UC)Ju­nior Web­mas­ters an­ni­hi­lated the Don Bosco Grey­wolves, 62-38, to take the solo sec­ond spot in the ju­niors divi­sion with a 3-1 win-loss card. The Grey­wolves fur­ther lan­guished at the cel­lar with a piti­ful 0-4 mark.
