Magis Eagles notch first win
The Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu (SHS-AdC) Magis Eagles turned to a fourthquarter offensive surge to outlast the Cebu Institute of TechnologyUniversity (CIT-) Wildkittens, 71-60, for their first victory in the 18th Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation, Inc. (CESAFI) men's basketball tournament yesterday at the Cebu Coliseum.
Coincidentally, all the top five scorers of SHSAteneo in Koko Tuadles, Rey Lewis, LA Casinillo, Rafael Tan and Jao Celirinos charted 11 points as the Magis Eagles snapped out of their two-game slide, their worst start since they started to dominate the league in 2012 that brought them a total of four straight championships.
The Magis Eagles barged into the win column the hard way, with the Wildkittens controlling the match in all of the three periods.
Showing some fighting form, however, the Magis Eagles slowly chiseled away a 10-point deficit after the opening session, 12-22, and even seized the upper hand on several occasions through the Wildkittens managed to hang to a 4643 edge heading into the final 10-minute mark of the contest.
Tuadles, however, suddenly caught fire, knocking in three 3-pointers in a 14-5 blast that put the Magis Eagles on top for good, 57-51, with only 5:28 left to play.
Celirinos later buried another trey, Lewis hit a medium-range jumper, and Tuadles completed a breakaway layup as the Magis Eagles made it a 23-7 blitz to virtually put the win in their pocket with a 66-53 advantage underneath the last two minutes of play.
Earlier, Jerick Jan Ranido dropped 15 of his 24 points in the first half as the University of Cebu (UC)Junior Webmasters annihilated the Don Bosco Greywolves, 62-38, to take the solo second spot in the juniors division with a 3-1 win-loss card.
