Typhoon ‘Rosita’ leaves at least 9 dead in Luzon

At least nine people died from landslides spawned by typhoon Rosita, a disaster official said Wednesday afternoon.

Citing figures from the Department of the Interior and Local Government, National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council spokesperson Edgar Posadas said there were three deaths in Mountain Province, four in Ifugao, one in Kalinga, and one in Abra.

At least three were confirmed missing, he added.

Posadas noted that there might be more people who lost their lives and remained missing during the onslaught of "Rosita" but the NDRRMC still needs to validate reports.

Nearly three dozen people were feared buried when a wall of mud slammed into a Department of Public Works and Highways building in Natonin, Mountain Province.

Severe Tropical Storm Rosita, previously classified a typhoon when it cut across Luzon landmass Tuesday, affected 11,878 households or 24,447 individuals.

A total of 8,864 families or 32,519 persons, meanwhile, were pre-emptively evacuated in Regions 1, 2, 3 and Cordillera Administrative Region.

In a statement, Malacañang said the president has directed all government agencies to immediately respond and undertake measures to aid the victims and to rehabilitate the typhoonravaged areas.

It added that the Department of Social Welfare and Development and the local government units have already provided a total of P834,304.90 worth of assistance. —
