Roger Abella chess, scrab­ble tour­neys on to­day

Over a hun­dred word wizards and pawn­push­ers from all over Cebu will test each other's met­tle as the 5th Roger Abella Me­mo­rial Open Chess and Scrab­ble Tour­na­ment gets un­der­way to­day at Robin­sons Gal­le­ria Cebu.

"All is set for the chess and scrab­ble tour­ney. We're ex­pect­ing more than a hun­dred par­tic­i­pants from dif­fer­ent schools and uni­ver­si­ties and pro­fes­sional play­ers," said Mar­i­lyn Abella of the or­ga­niz­ing Cebu Scrab­ble As­so­ci­a­tion.

Fol­low­ing a 7-round Swiss sys­tem for­mat, the chess tilt fea­tures the kid­dies, ladies and open di­vi­sion.

The scrab­ble com­pe­ti­tion, on the other hand, will have the el­e­men­tary, high school and pro­fes­sional cat­e­gories.

Cash prizes, tro­phies and medals will be given away to the win­ners.

Spear­headed by the Cebu Scrab­ble As­so­ci­a­tion in part­ner­ship with the Cebu City Sports Com­mis­sion, Robin­sons Gal­le­ria Cebu and De­part­ment of Ed­u­ca­tion Cebu City Di­vi­sion, the one-day event is staged in mem­ory of the late na­tional chess mas­ter and Cebu Sports Hall of Famer Roger T. Abella.
