Amid the ever becoming competitive environment in the medical industry, PSH is moving towards innovation as it ventures into new equipment to remain a highly competitive medical institution in the Visayas.

The Cebu Urologic Institute and PSH have acquired new equipment that treats prostate enlargement through laser surgery called the “ThuLEP” technology, an investment that is set to upgrade its well-respected Urology Institute.

PSH’s Urologist, Dr. John Mata said, “Thullium Laser Surgery of the prostate is becoming the fast emerging modality for Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH) or any bladder tumors. It is safe and effective with several studies to back it up. Compared to other modalities like Holmium, it works on a different wavelength which means minimal coagulation depth, less tissue injury but better hemostatic central as it is a safer device.”

BEST UROLOGICAL CARE

PSH, with over 80 years of existence in the industry, is modernizing its Urology Institute to offer the latest technology in the medical field and give its patients the best urological care and safest standards as possible.

Dr. Melonil Cabahug, one of the Urologists at PSH, explains that this new equipment is mainly used for vaporization of the prostate gland with less or minimal bleeding.

The procedure, he says, could be done on an out-patient basis.

According to Urologist, Dr. Alan Mejarito, this is the latest innovation in Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH) surgery which makes operation almost bloodless with no risk of TURP Syndrome which credits PSH’s Cebu Urologic Institute as the most advanced center in Urology in Cebu.

Dr. Cabahug further explains, “More patients will opt for this procedure since there is low down time and it is cost effective due to its short hospital stay,” he says.

“We need to have better services and cater to more patients in the Visayas and Mindanao areas. Modern techniques and technology are becoming less invasive, which translate to shorter hospital stay, quick recovery and patients go back to work faster,” he adds.

MEDICAL INNOVATION

Innovation is what keeps Perpetual Hospital consistently competitive in the industry, as it looks further into making its medical services as advanced as possible.

The FREEMAN also talked to Dr. Alexander Limkakeng, Chairman of the Board of PSH’s Cebu Urologic Institute, to talk more about this new investment.

Dr. Limkakeng said the new equipment uses laser technology to treat prostate enlargement instead of the old way of using electric current to open up the channel of the prostrate.

He stressed that it will put Perpetual Succour Hospital at par and keep up with the advancement of technology as one of the modern hospitals in Cebu, and in the Visayas and Mindanao regions as a whole.

The medical industry has continued to keep up with technological advancements. How does Perpetual Hospital ride on to the medical advancement nowadays?

Perpetual Succour Hospital has practically all of the state-of-the-art instruments and equipment in Urology. In keeping with its goal to have this technology, our doctors can practice Urology as any American Urologists, said Dr. Limkakeng.

He added they are adding modern equipment in the Urology Institute to keep up with technological advancements in urology.

Moreover, Limkakeng said they are also looking into Mini Nephroscope and Robotic Surgery.

Established on October 2003, Perpetual Succour Hospital’s Cebu Urologic Institute, is a setting for both technological and humane endeavor, providing an opportunity for a group of highly esteemed Urologists, to utilize the resources provided for them in a caring environment. One may find this center at the 8th floor of PSH’s SPC Medical Specialty Centre.

Technology and service innovation are the driving forces in healthcare. Looking into the future, PSH and its Cebu Urologic Institute will continue to aim to innovate and provide its clients the utmost care coupled with the latest advancement in technology and service. It will continue to develop in dramatic ways and actively work to ensure the best outcomes in service delivery without compromising the enhancement of the patient experience.
