Capitol still accepts donation for quake victims in Mindanao

- Lorraine L. Ecarma

The Cebu provincial government, through the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office, is still accepting donations for the earthquake-stricken areas in Mindanao.

The “Sugbo Alang sa Mindanao” donation drive, which was launched on November 2, has so far gathered canned goods, noodles, used clothing, bottled water, sanitary pads, and diapers from concerned citizens and capitol employees.

However, some of the bottles of water donated were already about to expire. At least 800 bottles of 350ml of mineral water donated are expiring this month prompting the Provincial Social Welfare and Development Office to give them instead to the fire victims in the province.

“Request lang pud namo nga dili lang pud unta siya hapit na ma-expire kay para magamit gyud didto ug mahatag gyud kay wa man ta kahibaw kung kanus-a ma-ship gikan dire padung Mindanao,” said Johnel Espinosa, PSWDO staff.

About 700 of the donated bottles of water would still be shipped to Mindanao have a later expiration date in 2020. Among the priority needs are hygiene kits, water, blankets, instant food items, tarps, and tents.

Meanwhile, Governor Gwendolyn Garcia said that the P20M donation of the province to the affected local government units in Regions 11 and 12 are now ready for turnover.

“The cheques for the eight local government units located in the two provinces which were hit by the earthquake in Mindanao are already ready,” she said.

Garcia added that although she cannot personally hand over the cheques due to prior commitments, Vice Governor Hilario Davide III will turn over the financial aid on behalf of the province.

“I have kindly asked the Vice Governor to deliver the cheques and he has graciously agreed,” she said.

Davide is set to leave for Mindanao on Monday. —
