Cops welcome stricter rules on bikers in Mandaue

- M. Mascardo/GMR — Iris Hazel

The Mandaue City Traffic Enforcement Unit is hopeful that the newly passed city ordinance would make a difference in the campaign against those undisciplined bikers who caused road accidents.

TEU chief, Police Lt. Colonel Franco Oriol, said that just in September alone, they have recorded seven bikers caught for causing road accidents.

According to Oriol, the new city ordinance dubbed as Comprehensive Bicycle Ordinance penalizes cyclists with no helmets, reflectors, blinkers, among others, with P50 administrative fine.

Aside from this, the ordinance also penalizes bikers caught counter-flowing, overloading, and not utilizing the bicycle lanes.

“Effective niadtong September 15, nagsugod na og enforce ang TEU sa Mandaue ug atong kapolisan, nianang city ordinance,” said Oriol.

Oriol said they are yet to apprehend any violator of the ordinance since the city government is still conducting the massive information dissemination since it was passed not so long ago.

“Hopefully makadugang ni og disiplina sa atong mga bikers.. kami sad sa PNP nalipay mi ani, amo ning gihangop nga city ordinance kay makatabang ni sa pagdisiplina sa mga bicycle drivers,” said Oriol.

Furthermore, Oriol said that they are still able to record road accidents caused by undisciplined bikers.

“Naa man guy bicycle drivers kanang mokalit lang og labang bisan og naka stop, or kanang mag biseklita gihapon sila sa gawas sa mga bicycle lanes nga intended para kanila,” said Oriol.

Currently, bikers caught violating traffic rules will have their bicycles impounded by the authorities.

Should the investigation show that they indeed caused the accident, they will be slapped with criminal charges.
