The Filipino voter on May 9 elections

- Lee Mark Songahid Tejero

On May 9, Filipino voters will cast their vote. A vote that can change the future of our beloved country. Let our conscience dictate our votes, and not vote because of the hype in social media which brought plenty of disinformation. Disinformation that conditioned the minds of the voters especially those who lack access to education to better understand our political landscape.

Voters in May 9 may be categorized as 1.) Those who look at track records, 2.) Those who just believe in piecemeal information because of trolls in social media. Ah, wait 3.) There are also those who just opted to be blinded to the truth because they are a loyalist of the father of a presidential wannabe.

One who is a loyalist of the presidential wannabe’s father, argued that the sins of the father is not the sins of the son! Let it be as everyone argued! They look at what the father did and his achievements, and with the hope that the son will also the same and do more for the good of our country. Granting arguendo, that the son will have the same genes as the father, how can we assure that he will be good for the country, when in fact he has not laid a concrete platform in all his campaign sorties, except a campaign for “unity”. Can this be eaten by the poorest of the poor to whom this presidential wannabe is targeting or it will be used to heal what the sins of his father?

On the other side, we have presidential candidate who is actually a brave person who goes against all odds. A presidential candidate who looks for the welfare of our country. Brave in the sense that even without a better half who can be a number one supporter, this candidate opted to look after the welfare of the Filipinos. This presidential candidate should have opted not to seek the highest position of the land as this candidate has nothing to prove anymore, but accepted the battle. A battle not just for the family but for Filipinos, and clean and honest governance. This presidential candidate could have opted to retire from politics but just like a geniune “ilaw ng tahanan”, opted to fight for the sake of Filipinos.

Let this 2022 election be true, honest, fair and credible. Let this election be one where we cast our votes based on track records, and not because of social media hype and commissioned surveys. Let this election be an election where majority of voters will think about country’s future and not the mindset that it’s up to individuals to improve their lot after the election, whoever wins. Let us vote based on conscience so that we will be proud and make history!
