A 28-year-old man believed to be driving under the influence of alcohol died after he accidentally rammed his motorcycle into the metal fence at Fuente Osmeña shortly before midnight on Tuesday.

Authorities identified the fatality as certain Gabriel Catelo, 28, a resident of B. Rodriguez Street, Cebu City. According to Police Major Nolan Primacio Tagsip, Abellana police station chief, Catelo was not wearing a helmet when the accident happened.

Tagsip said that Catelo's partner told the police that the victim had been in a drinking session prior to the incident.

"Pag-inom nilas B. Rodriguez, nilakaw lang ni kay magpa-gas diri sa may caltex sa may national bookstore and then right after nga nagpa-gas siya, nisutoy na sya without using helmet paingon Fuente Osmeña Circle pauli ngadto sa may B. Rodriguez," said Catelo.

Initial investigation revealed that Catelo rammed into the metal railings while trying to maneuver his motorcycle.

Catelo's partner told the police that the victim has the tendency to over speed when he is drunk. Due to over speeding Catelo lost control of the motorcycle and crashed into the fence.

"Then naigo iyang ulo, then mao to, gi try pa ni siya’g revive but he was declared dead on arrival," said Catelo.

Tagsip reminded the public to avoid driving while under the influence of liquor.

“Pahimangno sa kapolisan nga once makainom ta ibutang lang sa tiyan dili sa hunahuna, responsible driving lang gyud ta," said Tagsip.

He also added the importance of wearing a helmet when driving a motorcycle, adding that when the police responded they initially assessed that it was Catelo's head that was impacted the most during the crash.

"Dako ang possibility nga nahapak iyang ulo," said Catelo.
