Kids’ Own Summer Thirst Quenchers

- By Zaida Marie A. Tambis

These days, it is very common to wake up in the morning already sweating. We make sure to air out our pillows and hang our blankets for them to dry. We don’t want to sleep with anything that stinks. At day time, it is so uncomfortable to be outside because of the heat and humidity. Despite the discomfort, we can still make summer enjoyable by finding ways to cool down.

A cold beverage will definitely make you feel better, especially if it is healthy. Let me share my favorite drinks for the hot weather:

٠ Fresh Calamansi Juice. Slice up some calamansi fruits. About 3 to 5 pieces should be enough for 1 glass. Take out all the seeds. Add enough water. Mix some honey to taste. Pour in some ice cubes or crushed ice into the glass.

٠ Fresh Orange Juice. Cut 3 oranges in half and squeeze them into a glass. Using a fork, take out all the seeds. You may or may not add some water. If the oranges are cold or taken from the refrigerator, you may drink the juice right away. If not, place the juice in the refrigerator for at least 2 hours or in the freezer for 20 minutes before drinking it.

٠ Mixed Fruit Juice Drink. Pour a sachet of your favorite powdered orange juice into a pitcher. Fill it with a liter of water and stir. Cut up some apples and oranges into cubes. Add some ice cubes and stir again.

٠ Cucumber Lemon Juice. Cut up a cucumber into thin slices. Soak them in a pitcher of water. Roll a lemon on the table and slice it thinly. Combine the lemon slices with the cucumber. Remove the seeds. Add a little honey and stir. Refrigerate the whole mixture for at least 4 hours or overnight.

٠ Banana Smoothie. Slice up 2 bananas and put them in a blender. You may use frozen bananas to make a creamier smoothie. Pour in 2 cups of water and add some honey. Blend them until smooth.

٠ Banana carrot smoothie.

Cut up some frozen bananas and carrots into cubes. Place them in a blender. Add enough water to cover them. Blend them until they’re all mixed. Add some honey to taste. Blend again until smooth. Make sure to ask an adult to assist you in the slicing of the fruits to avoid accidents.

For your beverages to look more appealing, feel free to add garnish like mini umbrellas, orange peel twists, skewered olives or cherries. To make your drinks healthier, you may add more ingredients like chia seeds or flax seeds. As long as you serve your thirst quenchers frozen or chilled, you can turn any sizzling summer day into a cool one.
