Cebu City sustains low COVID numbers

- Mary Ruth R. Malinao Staff Member

Cebu City is able to sustain its COVID recovery efforts with a 0.32 percent daily positivity rate, 11 days after the May 9, 2022 elections.

In its May 20 data, the city’s Emergency Operations Center (EOC) recorded only 20 active cases with only two of 629 residents testing positive for the coronavirus.

One more recovered from the illness, bringing the total number of recoveries to 53,260 as of that day.

The EOC has not recorded any death for the month of May, so far.

Councilor Joel Garganera, EOC deputy chief implementer, continues to remind residents not to be complacent and to remain vigilant even with the constant drop of the city’s COVID numbers.

Garganera earlier attributed the sustained low numbers to the city’s vaccination rate.

The City Health Department (CHD) earlier called on students, parents, and teachers to get the anti-COVID vaccine ahead of the resumption of face-to-face classes.

Although not mandatory, vaccinated individuals are a priority in the limited face-to-face classes and physical teaching. This is to ensure everyone’s safety.

The CHD has started in-school vaccination in 13 schools that have been allowed limited face-to-face classes. The vaccination was interrupted by the recent general elections.

The department is also planning to expand the in-school vaccination as 37 more public schools are scheduled to resume the physical classes within the remaining school days before the school year ends.
