Most of the 101 dogs rescued from an abandoned illegal shelter in Barangay Adlaon, Cebu City will have to be euthanized soon due to their deteriorating health condition.

Cebu City veterinarian Dr. Jessica Maribojoc said 16 dogs have already died while most of the rescued animals are also very sick.

“Sa 101, naa nay namatay nga 16 kabuok,” Maribojoc told The Freeman.

She said the dogs were already very sick when they were rescued last week. It was learned that the animal shelter that was illegally operating in Barangay Adlaon was abandoned by its owner four months ago leaving behind a total of 127 dogs—mostly rescued-and a caretaker.

For three months, the caretaker fed the dogs using personal resources and without receiving a salary. With personal resources apparently depleted, the caretaker also decided to leave the animals to starve to death.

According to Maribojoc, when the dogs were rescued by them it was already almost a month that they have not eaten anything. Due to severe hunger some of the animals resorted to cannibalism, killing one of their own for survival. Some of the dogs also escaped to find food.

“Niwang na sad kaayo… almost one month wala nay kaon,” Maribojoc said.

Maribojoc, however, said eight of the rescued animals were found healthy and qualified for adoption.

“Naa na tay eight ka napili nga adoptable… and naa nay moadopt na duha… This Saturday kuhaon na sila or to be delivered at Parkmall since we will also promote adoption there,” she said.

Unfortunately, the remaining animals will have to be euthanized as their health are slowly deteriorating.

“The rest nagkahinay-hinay na’g kamatay kay hinay na kaayo sila… naa nay nag sakit… Pag-abot sa pound, ang environment sad nato very stressful so dali ra gyud sila takdan og sakit,” Maribojoc said.

Under the Anti-rabies Act, impounded dogs not claimed after three days will be subject for adoption to qualified persons, with the assistance of an animal welfare nongovernment organization, when feasible, otherwise, it can be disposed of in any manner authorized under the Animal Welfare Act.

“Ang naka nindot sa Cebu City, wala na nato gibuhat… gitagaan pa natog chance ang mga dogs diha na mapa adopt nato… But selective euthanasia na sad ang atong ginabuhat karon,” Maribojoc said.

“Ang kato na gyung masakiton, naay history nga naka paak, ug dili na sad nato ma rehab gyud, lisod na kaayo…so mao toy subject for euthanasia,” she added.

The killing, however, will be done in a “humane” manner.

“Dili na tambotso or carbon monoxide atong kuan, kay wala naman na klase sa pag-euthanize sa dog…Ang ato is...put down gyud siya nga patulgon nato,” said Maribojoc.
