Who are the women who inspire you?
Mercy Corrales truly inspires me. She’s a very brilliant Filipina whose competence, creativity, and passion have made her a widely respected global leader. She has defied what the mainstream thinks of a Filipina, with unbelievable achievements in male-dominated societies like Japan. All this, and yet she still remains both humble and committed to our country’s betterment.
Who, in your opinion, are female role models for today’s youth?
People who have found success doing what they love to do are obvious role models. I think, though, that just as important as identifying role models is also being able to see the admirable in each person — no matter what stage they are in their lives.
What women’s issues are you tackling in your organization?
Our organization takes in young women who have been marginalized in society — either because of trafficking, abuse, or just simply poverty. By giving them the dignity of work, access to higher education, and the opportunity to be part of enterprises that give back, we hope to somehow give them enough confidence and skills to be productive and independent members of society.
What can we do to empower ourselves as modern women?
I think the best way for us women to empower ourselves is by staying informed (read a lot, and stay connected), passionate (do what you love, or at the very least, love what you do!), and by always challenging ourselves to contribute positively to our communities.
