Dolphy may be moved to regular room tomorrow or Tuesday

- By MIKE FRIALDE

Comedy King Dolphy continues to get better as doctors at the Makati Medical Center are preparing to move him to a regular hospital room by next week should his infection be suppressed by antibiotics, his son, actor Eric Quizon, told reporters yesterday.

Quizon said the condition of his father’s kidneys have also improved, along with his digestive system.

Quizon said Dolphy’s kidney functions have improved from 10 percent to just above 20 percent.

“Today he is having dialysis. For the last two days, there was no blood transfusion so at least, it’s improving. According to the doctors, there is no more internal bleeding which is good. Kidney function has improved from less than 10 percent to what doctors say now is a little above 20 percent. This is a really big improvement,” he said.

Quizon said his father had even asked for orange juice and has started to be more interactive.

Quizon, however, adds that his father still could not speak and has to make do by “mouthing” his words and by using gestures and facial expressions.

“He asked for orange juice and water. Maybe he was thirsty. He is very lucid. We can’t hear his words, but he mouths. So we really have to clarify what he is saying,” he said.

Quizon said that Dolphy will be taking a rest from his dialysis sessions this weekend after the noticeable improvement.

He said Dolphy’s doctors are just waiting for the results of his blood culture to be sure that he is now rid of infection and can be moved to a regular hospital room, either tomorrow or Tuesday.

Quizon said his father actually wants to go home and he will be able to do so once the doctors give the clearance.

Quizon added that his father has been cleared of pneumonia but because his immune system is weak he remains susceptible to the disease.

Meanwhile, Quizon said that the tracheostomy tube attached to his father’s neck to enable him to breathe will remain.

Quizon said Dolphy’s doctors said his father can still speak later on.

“He can later on, but it would take some time. For now he mouths his words. And he nods, he grimaces and he smiles,” he said.
