prestigious I am a freshman university in in a Manila what course but I to do take. not know I do not know what I will do

after college or what field I want to work in. I feel like all my friends know where their careers are going already except me and I am starting to get insecure. Please help!

— LOST CAREER DEAR LOST CAREER, First of all, do not feel disknow couraged if you still do not know what career you

want to have. After all, you are just in your first year of college. There are many people even older than you who still do not know what to major in or what job they would like to have. And I have news for you. All those people who claim that they exactly what they want to do? A lot of them will probably change their minds in a year or two! So again, do not get discouraged.

However, you need to start thinking about where it is you really want to go. A good place to start is

to figure out what classes you really enjoy the most. Is it math? Economics? Psychology? Chemistry? Literature? And then from there you can start looking at what degree and what jobs you can get based on what interests you.

For example, if you love to read and write and your favorite class is literature, then you can look at careers that involve books or writing. Take note that a career that involves writing is not limited to journalism, writing for newspapers and magazines or being an author. There is always a need for good writers. Advertising agencies, PR agencies and other marketing oriented companies need good writers all the time. So you can look at those options as well.

On the other hand if you are interested in something like sports, health and nutrition, perhaps you can look at a career in athletics. Again, note that it does not mean you become a coach or a trainer

necessarily. You can also find a lot of jobs with companies who are somehow involved in sports in general. This can include the people who organize tournaments and fun runs or perhaps those that conduct sports camps for kids. There are quite a number of choices out there.

I think one of the key things to remember is when you find the field you are interested in, there are more ways than ever to get involved in that field without going the “traditional” route. You are lucky today because there are more options than ever for you to do something that you truly love.

And remember, as the old saying goes, “Do what you love and the money will follow.”

Good luck! Sincerely, NANAY

HOW MUCHISTOOMUCH? DEAR NANAY,

I have three teenagers now who are all doing very well in school. I have always allowed them to watch TV and play video games. But the only catch is that I limit it to less than one hour a day.

In this question of whether or not TV and video games are acceptable for children, I don’t think the answer is a clear-cut yes or no. I think the answer is “it depends.” It depends on your children and it depends on you. And it also depends on what you mean by letting them watch TV and play video

games. If you let them do it for four or five hours a day, then that is probably clearly too much. But if you let them do it for one hour a day only then I really do not think you will have a problem.

Just remember that like everything else in life, it should be done in moderation and in the right amount. Too much of anything is not good for you. You have to control the amounts just like food or medicine. In the end, it all boils down to discipline. If you can discipline your children and yourselves that you will limit their time, then you will not have a problem. If you cannot discipline your children and yourselves, then for sure you will have a problem. — MAAN66
