10th Martin Cup lures 30 teams

A total of 30 school teams have signed up for the 10th Fr. Martin Division 2 Cup basketball tournament, which reels off on July 21 at the St. Placid gymnasium of the San Beda College-Mendiola campus.

The defending champion San Beda Red Lions are among the 14 varsity entered, and will seek to retain its crown in the senior division of this cagefest, which is a tournament for the participat­ing schools’ team B squads, most especially the UAAP and NCAA member schools.

The tournament is usually held during the ongoing collegiate season, and offers a chance for varsity cagers who are listed in their alma mater’s farm team to showcase their talents.

Xavier School is defending its title in the high school division, and they are among the 16 quintets which are listed.

Tournament secretary-general Joey Lim said that Robert de la Rosa has replaced Aric del Rosario as commission­er, after del Rosario was appointed coach of the University of Perpetual Help Altas, while deputy commission­er Jun Cordero will be joining coach Ato Badolato’s team of UAAP technical officials as one of the former’s deputies.

Other teams competing in the senior division are Ateneo de Manila, National University, Trinity University of Asia, San Sebastian College teams A and B, Angeles University Foundation, University of Perpetual Help, Eac-manila, University of the East, and Jose Rizal University.

In the junior division, Letran and Hope Christian High School is in the list of participan­ts, along with San Beda, Far Eastern University­FERN, University of Santo Tomas, Chiang Kai Shek teams A and B, UE, E.A.C.-I.C.A.- Cavite, San Sebastian College, and Trinity University of Asia.
