Kabayan’s radio program wins in New York Festivals’ best public affairs program category
Veteran broadcaster Noli “Kabayan” De Castro said journalists continue to play a vital role in the global stage, especially in strife-torn areas where the welfare and safety of innocent civilians must be protected.
De Castro made the remarks after he received the Bronze in the 2012 New York Festivals (NYF) International Radio Programs and Promotions Awards in the News Program category’s Best Public Affairs Program.
The award was given last June 18 at ceremonies held in New York City.
The NYF honored De Castro’s top-rating program “Kabayan: Kapangyarihan ng Mamamayan, Balita at Talakayan,” particularly its episodes where the broadcaster kept vigil over the plight of Filipino overseas workers trapped in the war in Syria. The hook- up with the OFWs enabled the latter to obtain assistance from the Department of Foreign Affairs in their bid to escape from the crossfire and return home.
The program, aired over DZMM from Monday to Friday, offered hope to despairing OFWs who were cut off from supplies and contact with Syria-based Philippine diplomatic officials.
De Castro said he shares the NYF award with his production staff and field reporters, as well as with the rest of the Philippine journalistic community.
De Castro’s program “Kabayan” continues to top ratings in the 6 to 8 a.m. slot. The program replicated its consistent number one rating before De Castro left media to enter public service. The program immediately regained its top spot when De Castro resumed broadcasting after completing his stint as the country’s vice president.
