‘Philippine Art History’ lectures at Ateneo Art Gallery

Take a trip through the more than hundredyea­r history of Philippine art at the Ateneo Art Gallery with its Philippine Art Lecture Series. Taught by experts in the Þelds of colonial, academic, modern and contempora­ry art, the series will give participan­ts an overview of the developmen­t of Philippine art from the 19th century all the way up to todayÕs lively art scene.

The seven sessions happen on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 12 noon.

Fr. Rene Javellana, SJ, talks about ÒPhilippin­e Colonial ArtÓ on Sept. 22. Fr. Javellana teaches in the Fine Arts Program of the Ateneo de Manila University. He has authored several books on Philippine architectu­re and style including La Casa de Dios: The Legacy of Filipino- Hispanic Churches in the Philippine­s, Fortress of Empire: Spanish Colonial FortiÞcati­ons of the Philippine­s, 15651898, Wood and Stone for GodÕs Greater Glory: Jesuit Art and Architectu­re in the Philippine­s,

Dr. Eloisa May Hernandez talks about ÒArt in the Academic period- Damian Domingo to Fernando AmorsoloÓ on Sept. 29 and Oct. 6. Eloisa May Hernandez, Ph.D., is an assistant professor at the Department of Art Studies, University of the Philippine­s. She is the author of Homebound: Women Visual Artists in 19th Century Philippine­s and co-author of a Philippine Art and Culture, part of a series of books for high school students which aims to stimulate understand­ing of and appreciati­on of the multi-cultural nature of Philippine society.

Ma. Victoria Herrera talks about ÒModern Art in the Philippine­sÓ on Oct. 20 and 27. Ma. Victoria Herrera is the ofÞcer-in-charge of the Cultural Center of the Philippine­sÕ Visual Arts and Museum Division. She is a lecturer in the Ateneo de Manila University­Õs Fine Arts program and assistant professor in the Department of Art Studies, University of the Philippine­s. She has curated numerous exhibition­s including ÒYuta: Earthworks by Julie Lluch, A Retrospect­iveÓ; ÒWindows to Conversati­ons: Roberto Chabet, Lee Aguinaldo, Fernando ZobelÓ; and ÒLee Aguinaldo: A Retrospect­ive.Ó

Dr. Flaudette May Datuin talks about ÒPhilippin­e Contempora­ry ArtÓ on Nov. 10 and 17. Flaudette May V. Datuin, Ph.D., is an associate professor at the Department of Art Studies in the University of the Philippine­s and co-founding editor of Ctrl+P, a contempora­ry arts journal launched in 2006 with informatio­n about contempora­ry art and culture in the Philippine­s and internatio­nally. Datuin is also the author of Home Body Memory: Filipina Artists in the Visual Arts, 19th Century to the Present. She has curated numerous exhibition­s including the recent multi-venue exhibit featuring local and internatio­nal artists titled ÒNothing to Declare.Ó
