Macluhan, JVO Fellowship awards winners named

MALOLOS CITY— Investigat­ive journalist Malou Mangahas bagged this year’s Marshall MacLuhan Fellowship award during the 19th Jaime V. Ongpin Journalism Seminar (JVOJS) organized by the Center for Media Responsibi­lity (CMFR) in Makati City yesterday.

Mangahas is also one of the seven journalist­s in the country who earlier were awarded the JVO Fellowship and served as panelists in this year’s seminar.

The other journalist­s are Henry Omaga-Diaz of ABSCBN Network, Deo Dominick Bugaoisan of GMA Network, Pia Hontiveros Pagkalinaw­an of Solartv, Ryan Rosauro of the

Philippine Daily Inquirer, Raissa Robles of riassarobl­es.com, and Lynda Jumilla-Abalos of ABSCBN.

Jumilla- Abalos was last year’s MacLuhan Fellow and was one of the JVO Fellows along with Mangahas.

An executive director of the Philippine Center for Investigat­ive Journalism (PCIJ), Mangahas is the second PCIJ ožcial to win the fellowship since 2010, when Ed Lingao bagged the award.

The prestigiou­s Marshall MacLuhan fellowship is awarded by the Canadian Embassy in Manila and supported by the Sun Life of Canada Insurance.

It provides travel and speaking opportunit­ies for the winner in universiti­es in Canada.

James Crystal, charge d’affaires of the Canadian embassy said that the award is a recognitio­n for Filipino journalist who excelled in their job.

The same was echoed by Maribel Ongpin for the winners of their year’s JVO fellowship.

She also urged journalist­s to continue enlighteni­ng the people with regards to pressing issues of the day especially corruption.

The annual JVOJS was also highlighte­d by the handing of the Sandra Burton Neiman Fellowship to Nini Cabaero of

Sun.Star Cebu.

The award was handed by Rafa Lopa of thr Ninoy and Cory Aquino Foundation (NCAF).

Lopa said that the fellowship is given to Filipino journalist through the NCAF by the Sandra Burton Foundation, an organizati­on named after the late American journalist.

As this developed, the CMFR led a media literacy seminar for students of mass communicat­ions after the JVOJS yesterday.

The media literacy seminar was participat­ed by students instructor­s from universiti­es based in Manila, Bicol and Bulacan. —
