St. Jude trims GCC, earns playoff berth

St. Jude Catholic School upended Grace Christian College, 59-44, to clinch a playoff for the second final berth in the Juniors Division of the first Philippine Ching Yuen Athletic Associatio­n (PCYAA) basketball tournament at the Uno High School gym in Manila last Sunday.

The Judetines, starring Maynard Nielsen Yap, Renzel Yongco and Francis Go, dominated early, 31-21, then sustained their form in the second half to demolish the GCC cagers.

With the win, the Judenites firmed up their bid with a 6-2 record, needing just a win over Phil. Cultural College today to formalize their stint in the finals against Uno High School in the tournament sponsored by Boysen Paints, alentino Watches and Clocks, Sony peria, Duralite Sandals and Nougat Peanut Bar.

The Uneans capped their eight-game sweep with an 83-69 drubbing of Makati Gospel ChurchNew ife Christian Academy.

Yongco finished with 22 points on 10-for-21 shooting.

n the other game, Philippine Cultural College surprised St. Peter the Apostle School, 69-64, for its second win in eight outings.

Meanwhile, the Makati Gospel Church-New ife Christian Academy completed an eight-game sweep of the elims in the Developmen­tal Division (for players age 11 and under).

MGC-N CA battles GCC in a one-game faceoff on Saturday.
