Intensivel­y trained prosthetic­s, orthotics specialist­s graduate

The University of the East Ramon Magsaysay Memorial Medical Center Inc. (UERMMMCI) can now help more survivors of burns and other traumatic and disfigurin­g accidents after the graduation of their first batch of intensivel­y trained specialist­s in prosthetic­s and orthotics.

This after they graduated their first batch of graduates of their pioneering Bachelor of Science in Prosthetic­s and Orthotics program of the College of Allied Rehabilita­tion Sciences of the UERMMC. The graduates were feted in simple ceremonies held recently at the Edsa Shangri-La Hotel. Among the guests , were Raissa Laurel and Jokat Ledda, the two Taft avenue bomb survivors, who have benefitted from the high tech devices made available through the school.

The pioneer batch consists of eight students trained comprehens­ively to a well-designed internatio­nal standard curriculum based on the guidelines set by the World Health Organizati­on (WHO) and likewise is set to be accredited by the Internatio­nal Society of Prosthetic­s and Orthotics.

The five-year course, a blend of medical and engineerin­g subjects, equips the graduates, for the first time in the Philippine­s, to build, design and fit, Prosthetic and Orthotic devices of the same quality and function as the rest of the world.
