Mondrian Magnifique!
Regarded by many to be one of the fathers of Modern Art, Dutch painter Piet Mondrian will be forever known for his eponymous art style and his founding of the Neoplasticism ( De Stijl) movement. Initially a student of Cubi sm, Mond r ian set forth to create his paintings composed of var ious squares and rectangles of red, blue, yellow, gray and black.
Hannah Hoch, a friend of Mondrian, once said, “Everything in his life was reasoned or calculated. He was a compulsive neurotic and could never bear to see anything disordered or untidy. He seemed to suffer acutely, for instance, if a table had not been laid with perfect symmetry.”
The Mondr ian style has since found its way in both interior design and in fashion. Yves St. Laurent used Mondrian’s concept in a number of his day dresses, Nike dedicated Dunk SBs and Keds after the artist, Christian Louboutin used Mondrian’s look as inspiration for wedge shoes and Australian designer Sarah Schofield interpreted Mondrian’s images as swimwear.
Using crepe silk fabric, coutur ier Rem Divino presents his own reinvention of the Mondr ian with his col lect ion of cocktai l and evening out f its. “When one uses Mondr ian’s bold color ways and style, there is no need to complicate the cut of a dress or gown. The composition and hues combined make for a singular, powerful statement,” Divino shares.
