UP-PGH to hold grand symposium ‘Ortho Rocks’
The department of orthopedics of the University of the Philippines-Philippine General Hospital (UP-PGH) will hold a grand symposium entitled, “Orthopedics: A Review of Core Knowledge (ORTHO ROCKs)” on June 20 and 21 at the Crowne Plaza Manila Galleria in Ortigas Center.
According to overall course directors Dr. Carlo Sumpaico and Dr. Dave Dizon, this two- day symposium is envisioned to be an intensive and comprehensive review course of the specialty of orthopedics. With lectures covering the entire spectrum of orthopedic practice, from basic to clinical science, including all major subspecialties; the course aims to strengthen the core knowledge of anyone involved in the learning and practice of this dynamic musculoskeletal specialty, be they undergraduate student, resident, fellow-in-training, or practicing orthopedic surgeon.
The two-day program provides a concise yet comprehensive series of lectures and updates in Basic Orthopedic Science and the subspecialties of Hand, Upper Extremity Trauma, Lower Extremity Trauma, Adult Orthopedics, Children’s Orthopedics, Spine, Microvascular & Reconstructive Surgery, Sports Medicine, Joint Replacement, and Musculoskeletal Tumors.
Course faculty is composed of current members of the UP-PGH department of orthopedics consultant staff as well as alumni from the same department. Each lecturer is internationally trained and is a key opinion leader in his or her chosen subspecialty.
Dr. Edward Wang, chair of the department, states that ORTHO ROCKs is in line with one of the major thrusts of the department, i.e. to provide training and continuing medical education. It is meant not only for orthopedic trainees and fresh graduates reviewing for the in-training and diplomate examinations but also for established practitioners who want to strengthen their core knowledge of this branch of surgery dedicated to the treatment of musculoskeletal conditions.
In over forty years of existence, the department of orthopedics of the UP-PGH has consistently dedicated herself to the advancement of the specialty in the country. The department is recognized for spearheading innovative and high-impact programs in training, research and patient service.
Its known commitment to training, research and patient service allows the Department of Orthopedics to provide the highest standards of orthopedic care to over 27,000 indigent patients annually. Close to 2,500 operations are performed every year, many of these complex surgeries which require the expertise and experience of the Department’s dedicated staff.
