The Movie and Television Review and Classification Board (MTRCB) successfully held its second MTRCB Family and Child Summit before a packed audience at the GT Toyota Asian Center Auditorium, University of the Philippines Diliman last Nov. 8 in line with the celebration of its 29th anniversary.

The gathering, dubbed as Matalinong Panonood Para sa

Pamilya at Lipunan nina Juan

at Juana, was attended by 800 participants which included parents, youth, educators and formators from various educational, religious and government institutions, representatives from government and from the television and film industries.

The summit was designed to further strengthen the MTRCB’s ratings system and audience empowerment mandate by establishing the family as their foundation, and projecting it towards Philippine society for greater impact.

In his opening remarks, MTRCB chairperson Eugenio “Toto” Villareal noted that “society is our larger family and that the ratings system will be nothing if the family and society will not be able to understand and use it as well,” in his immediate call for active and participatory citizenship based on both individual and collective understanding of the ratings system.

The event’s two main speakers were Sen. Paolo Benigno “Bam” Aquino who called for more edifying television shows that will spur social change, and Camarines Sur Third District Rep. Maria Leonor “Leni” Robredo, who tackled the importance of the family as foundation for discerning viewership.
