Serious look at relationships

-

Love begets love, they say; but in reality, love sometimes begets pain.

Take the case of Minda, for example. Left to raise a child on her own, all she wanted was to find a man whom she will love and who, in turn, will make her feel loved. Minda may have looked for affection in all the wrong places because the same quest made her desperate for a man’s attention and loving embrace.

Then she met Daniel. It took Minda no time to fall for the young man she barely knew. Their relationship proved to be sweet as it was in the beginning but it later caused her her greatest heartache. Minda found herself caught in a rivalry for Daniel’s love — not against another woman, but against her only son, Ryan.

Another story is that of Marlon and Tere’s. Marlon wanted for nothing more than to be with Tere; and when she agreed to marry him, Marlon was overjoyed to finally spend the rest of his life with the woman of his dreams.

Years passed and their marriage turned sour. Time stripped Tere off her youthful beauty and her treatment towards Marlon changed. Was Tere to be blamed for failing to look after herself while she attends to their growing family?

Finally, there’s Lily and her husband Paul, a couple who badly wanted to have a child of their own. This led them to open their doors to Rowena, a disgraced woman who consented to have her unborn baby adopted by the couple in exchange for money. Lily and Paul treated Rowena as though she’s a part of the family but she took advantage of the couple, demanding far beyond money, which later threatened their marriage.

No, these are not the typical love stories most people would want to hear but sadly, these are based on true stories of those who fell in love and fell hard.

Beginning yesterday, take a closer look at relationships and all its complications via Karelasyon — the newest drama anthology offering of GMA News and Public Affairs.

Presenting the show is none other than Kapuso premier leading lady and host Carla Abellana. Coming from her previous successful acting projects like the phenomenal My Husband’s Lover and My Destiny, choosing to host Karelasyon is a deviation for the actress. “I’ve never hosted a drama anthology before and I saw this as a great opportunity to work with GMA News and Public Affairs for the first time,” shares Carla, who is new to hosting a show on her own.

She reveals that Karelasyon is special to her because, “It holds a lot of firsts for me,” and then adds, “Although I’ve had small solo hosting stints in the past, this one puts me under a lot of pressure not just because of network competi-

tion but because it’s a whole brand-new show that GMA is showcasing.”

When asked to describe Karelasyon, Carla says, “We’ve all watched shows that tell stories of actual life experiences of people, tragic or not, where we see re-enactments. These re-enactments may be played by talents or actors in short or lengthy exposures.

Karelasyon focuses on real-life experiences of couples in relationships. What makes it different is the theme and manner of storytelling. Karelasyon is darker and much serious.”

The one-of-a-kind program tackles the side of love not too many are brave enough to face — a side where issues like extramarital relations, secret identity, extreme jealousy, ambition, vices, family or work-related issues, obsession with sex, money and even material possessions abound.

Every week tells a different tale brought to life by the talented stars of the network and helmed by today’s acclaimed directors and writers from the indie scene. The stories above are only some of the episodes that consist the first few weeks of Karelasyon.

For its pilot episode yesterday, versatile actress Mylene Dizon played the role of Minda, opposite Mark Herras and Martin del Rosario, who portrayed Daniel and Ryan, respectively. It was written and helmed by renowned indie director Adolf Alix Jr.

A beautiful thing, love is. Still, it demands beyond willingness to take on its many challenges in order to keep it.

Karelasyon airs Saturdays at 2:30 p.m. right after Eat

Bulaga!.
