The challenge and excitement of moving to a new place come with the discovery of new things and new places. We are still exploring our new base and happily, we have found different sources of food stuff and household needs. Some are familiar spin-offs of establishments that we have frequented, but because of our research instinct we would always check on their out-of-town branches.

The South Supermarket located on the main road facing the Sta. Rosa Paseo has been there for quite sometime, in fact it must have been the first such outlet in the then emerging business hub. Today it is a busy place for homemakers and other residents in the area, all doing their grocery chores or having their snacks at the many stalls on its first level. It is good that the parking area is located in the basement which means, during the rainy season, a shopper won’t get wet.

On the street level are various food stalls/outlets. There is French Baker where the new offerings are the grilled vegetable salad at P225 a serving and crabmeat sandwich with balsamic dressing and potato chips. There are stalls for squid balls, Korean lunch boxes that include

bimbap, apparently a take off from the bibimbap, for P99. There is a delicatessen with all sorts of cold cuts and sausages. Sandwiches and cold cuts platters can also be ordered here.

On the upper level is the supermarket. It is quite full, with merchandise items practically crowding each other for space. In the seafood section, an area where this particular chain excels, there are giant prawns at P750 a kilo, dulong which we make into torta (omelette) for P250 a kilo, squid at P280 which is much cheaper than some other outlets, the expensive señorita lapu-lapu for P530 a kilo. Among the pork cuts are pigue at P188 a kilo, prime spareribs for P229.

In their freezers are various ready-to-cook packs, among them the dhal curry mixes, crepes from Village Gourmet.

We also noted the Fisherfarms’ rellenong bangus, costing P145 a small box of 325 gms. It is strange that in other chains this particular product in two sizes are sold or tagged at almost triple this price. What price control are they practicing?

A few days after, we found ourselves in the Alabang outlet of South Supermarket. We noted a new section, the Herb Garden, where there is a wide selection of fresh greens and herbs. They’ve got Dizon Farms’ arugula for P32 a pack of .080 gms, spinach at P44.65 for .235 gms and fresh dill at P29 a small bag of .085 gms.

Also new are the imports from Spain, the Carpo Frio cold cuts that include jamon serrano and chorizo Pamplona. They are ideal for cooking Iberian dishes such as cocido and fabada, while they can also serve as picapica to be served before a meal. There you are – there is a food outlet wherever you go. Explore and find your cooking needs.

Have a good family Sunday!
