Top universities, colleges vie in Volvo nat’l alumni tiff
With alumni from the top universities and colleges in the country signed up, everything is set for the inaugural edition of the Volvo National Alumni Golf championship on Thursday at the Manila Southwoods Golf and Country Club in Carmona, Cavite.
The tournament, the first ever alumni golf competition open to all schools in the country, is also the first to require that all participants hold a graduate or baccalaureate degree from the educational institution that they represent.
Slated to be held on the Jack Nicklausdesigned Legends Course, the 18-hole event will involve five-man teams with the best four scores to count using the Molave Points scoring system.
“Volvo Philippines is delighted to be involved with the National Alumni Golf Championship,” said Chris Yu, Volvo senior manager for marketing strategy. “We want to become part of a golfing event that rekindles the competitive school spirit and brings recognition to the schools that have produced the best golfers.”
The tournament, which also involves Volvo owners acting as team captains, was in response to the demand for an alumni golf team competition that would be open to more schools as the annual dual-meets limited participation only to the alumni of the schools involved.
However, tournament organizers have decided to keep the field at 25 teams for the first staging of the event but would be open to increasing the number of teams in the future as the event gains traction among the country’s golfing alumni.
In addition to the team competition there will also be a race for individual honors. Aside from the other awards and prizes at stake, a brand-new Volvo V40 premium hatchback valued at P2,288.88 million will be staked as hole-in-one prize.
Alumni coming from Ateneo, San Beda, St. Luke’s, University of the Philippines, University of the East, College of St. Benilde, Asian Institute of Management, La Salle, Aquinas, Philippine Military Academy, Letran, University of Santo Tomas, Philippine National Police Academy and National University have already confirmed their participation.
