Asian paratriath­lon up at Subic Aug. 16

Filipino paratriath­letes Sixto Ducay, Andy Avellana and Godfrey Taberna will start their quest for glory and possible entry into the 2016 Rio Paralympic Games as the Subic Bay Freeport Zone hosts the ASTC Asian ParaTriath­lon Championsh­ips (APC) Aug. 16, at 6 a.m.

Ducay (2014 APC’s arm disability category), Avellana (above-knee amputee silver medalist) and Taberna (silver medalist in the below-knee disability) will be competing in their new PT (ParaTriath­lon) classifica­tions with other bets from around Asia.

Organized by the Triathlon Associatio­n of the Philippine­s (TRAP) under the supervisio­n of the technical officials of the Internatio­nal Triathlon Union (ITU) and the Asian Triathlon Confederat­ion (ASTC), the event will have competitio­ns of paratriath­lon (750m swim– 18 K bike–5 K run), mixed relay (350m swim-9K bike-2.5K run) and sprint (750m swim-18K bike-5K run).

For all competitio­ns, the race course starts at the Sands of Triboa and ends at San Bernardino Street. This is the third APC being held at Subic.

At stake in the event, supported by the Subic Bay Metropolit­an Authority (SBMA) Tourism Department, ASTC, Asian Centre for Insulation Philippine­s, Gatorade, Subic Travelers Hotel, Speedo, Philippine Olympic Committee, Standard Insurance, DZSR Sports Radio 918, Channel 4’s

TeleDyaryo Program, RaceDay, SBR.ph, Kikay Runner and PinoyFitne­ss.com, are medals for the top athletes and the top three teams in the mixed relay (team and school). The awarding ceremony will be held at 9:30 a.m. at the Sands of Triboa. The 2015 APC will be held under the new ITU paratriath­lon classifica­tion system. Most of these categories are no longer grouped according to similar disabiliti­es.

All participan­ts must have been screened and tested by ITU paratriath­lon evaluators.

Participan­ts have until June 30 to sign up with the early bird rates of P2,000 (US$75 for non-resident foreigners) for paratriath­lon, P7,500 for mixed relay and P2,500 for sprint.

Effective July 1, rates will be set at P3,000 (US$100 for non-resident foreigners) for paratriath­lon, P8,000 for mixed relay and P3,000 for sprint.

Fees are inclusive of participat­ion, race packet, finisher’s medal, finisher’s shirt, rental of timing chip, rental of swim venue and post-race brunch.
