Derek’s winning streak
Once a winner, always a winner.
That aptly describes Derek Ramsay who continues to be on a winning streak after his landmark Best Actor victory at last December’s Metro Filmfest for his performance in the sleeper hit English Only,
Please! (Second Best Picture and Jennylyn Mercado Best Actress, among the other awards).
Not only that. Derek is also perhaps the topnotch and most popular male endorser of various consumer brands (Belo Men, Dunkin’ Donuts, Tanduay, Smart, Boardwalk, etc.) and a winner in his other passion — sports and yes, entertainment. The TV5 star is on a roll!
In sports, Derek’s series of wins started with his strong second place finish at the Toyota Vios Car Racing Cup held recently in Nasugbu, Batangas. Although a neophyte racer, Derek beat experienced race drivers who also competed in the event.
“Amongst his peers in the industry,” gushed his manager Joji Dingdong, “Derek is really a class of his own. His passion in anything he does is his real ticket to excellence.”
What’s more, last week Derek finally conquered Mt. Pulag, Luzon’s highest peak, and the third in the country, rising more than 2,920 meters above sea level. The arduous four/five-hour trek really can test one’s strength and endurance.
“From the peak,” Derek told
Funfare, “you get an incredibly mesmerizing view of the place below. The triumphant feeling is priceless. Going down is a bit faster, taking only less than four hours depending on your pace.”
However, for Derek’s group it took longer because he had to accommodate fellow mountaineers and even children (residents of the area) that he encountered along the way for selfies and photo ops.
At the recentlyconcluded Guillermo Mendoza Foundation event, he was named Blockbuster Actor in a Breakthrough Indie Film for English Only, Please! According to one juror, “Derek Ramsay is really one of Philippine cinema’s game changers.”
