In indigent urban communities in Quezon City — Kawan, Sto. Niño in Old Balara and Saint Luigi Oriones Creations in Payatas — thrives a group of mothers who lovingly handloom environment-friendly footwear. These homemakers make a living through the help of social enterprise Habi, which was founded under the Sosyal Revolution, Inc., a social enterprise that aims to promote responsible fashion and produces comfortable espadrilles and sandals from upcycled materials.

Founded in 2011, women social entrepreneurs Janine Chiong, Paola Savillo, and Bernadee Uy created the environmental movement and livelihood program for lowincome earners in marginalized areas in the city. Retaso (loose fabrics) that are usually made into mats and rags, is the primary material used by these mothers to create fashionable yet comfortable footwear. The weavers are provided with additional skills-based training that applies to the whole community.

Habi has a wide collection of styles, ranging from modish to classic, catering to both women and men, as well as kids. One can choose between muted tones or bright hues depending on one’s taste and personality. Its retail stores are located in Metro Manila and Visayas. The products are also available online, through Zalora, to help it reach the international market. “Habi Footwear is all about responsible fashion, Pinoy pride and social involvement.”

The company is a social statement that not only aims for sustainable business growth, but also caters to socially aware and environmentally-concerned fashionistas. In the future, the brand aspires to expand the medium and create additional apparel to utilize authentic Philippine woven materials.
