Filipino pros confident Pagunsan back for good

-

Local aces welcomed the return of 2011 Asian Tour Order of Merit champion Juvic Pagunsan in the ICTSI Philippine Golf Tour, citing the impact of his comeback on the region’s fast-rising circuit.

“I’m sure he will make good and make a positive impact because he is one of the best players we have,” said Tony Lascuña, the reigning three-time OOM champion of the PGT.

Pagunsan is making a comeback of sort in the ICTSI Classic beginning today at Mt. Malarayat, his first appearance since he withdrew in the final round of the North-South Duel at Alabang in 2013.

He has been practicing at Malarayat as early as last week and confirmed his participation on the eve of the event.

“I’m excited for his return and it’s a nice thing that we will have our best player back on the circuit,” said ICTSI PGT 2009 inaugural OOM winner Elmer Salvador.

Jay Bayron, OOM champion in 2010, said Pagunsan’s return will further raise the level of the pros’ game and is a big boost for the local golf in general and the circuit in particular.

“With him back in the fold, I believe all of us will play more seriously and try to improve on our respective games,” said Bayron. “He can add to the credibility of each tournament and help make the tournament all the more exciting.”

“I also think many people would be watching and more sponsors would start coming in, which is also good for us,” said Bayron.

Charles Hong, who played with Pagunsan in a practice round last week, expects a strong showing from the talented shotmaker who also copped the PGT OOM title in 2011.

“It’s time for him to redeem himself,” said Hong.

Lascuña also said Pagunsan’s return will also help unify the pros and further boost Philippine golf.

“We have to be united, especially in supporting the PGT which has been helping not only the sport but also the pros,” said Lascuña. “But Juvic should also respect the tour and his fellow pros by doing the right attitude as a pro and a player.”
